Dear Brother and Sister Love,
What a pleasure it was to welcome Sister Savannah Brekay Love into the Utah Salt Lake City South Mission.  Her first day with us included breakfast and orientation at the mission office, a training session, lunch and, of course, meeting her first companion. I am impressed by her desire to serve.  She is well and in high spirits as she anticipates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.  Please be assured that we will be watching over her while she is here.  I'm attaching photographs taken as she was welcomed at the mission office.
After prayerful consideration, an excellent missionary, Sister Stewart, has been assigned as her trainer and first companion.  I am attaching our Family Guidelines which we urge you to follow.  We have learned from experience the importance of family and friends following these guidelines.  Please share the guidelines with those who may write to her.  Your compliance of these guidelines can reinforce your missionary's willingness to follow the guidelines in the Missionary Handbook.
All hard-copy letters and packages should be sent to the mission, addressed to Sister Savannah Love, at the address listed above.  Thank you for raising such an outstanding young person, worthy and willing to serve the Lord full time in our mission.  I know you will be blessed for the sacrifices that make her service possible.  May the Lord's choicest blessings be yours.

Guidelines for Missionary Families

Missionary Letters:  Missionaries are to write home each week to report briefly on mission activities, spiritual experiences, and to share testimonies.  Thank your missionary for the letter you receive.

Family Letters:  A weekly letter from home is vital to a missionary’s adjustment and provides incentive for her to write home weekly.  The letters should be full of encouragement and the assurance of your love and support.  Please do not share any word of problems at home because it can hinder missionary success.

Regular mail is important, but too much can hurt the work.

If you email your missionary weekly it is to be a letter and not an opportunity for online chatting.  A maximum of ninety minute internet usage is allowed for missionaries on preparation day to email family, friends, priesthood leaders and new converts, to view the two approved web sites and to read emails from friends and family.  

Send all hard copy mail and/or packages to the mission office with your missionary’s full name above the mission name.  The full name is important as there are many duplicate surnames.  Please share this with others who may write to your missionary.

Telephone Calls and Visits:  The Missionary Handbook states, “Visits from family members, friends, and acquaintances are against Church policy.”  p. 37

Missionaries are allowed to call home only on Christmas and Mother’s Day.  Any exceptions must be cleared beforehand with the mission president.  

Please feel free to call the mission office in the event of an emergency.  The mission office hours are 9:00am – 4:30 pm Monday through Friday, except for holidays.  If you phone after hours, a message will give you a number to call.  The mission president personally delivers any urgent message or unexpected news.

Gifts:  A personal, practical, and inexpensive gift from home to the missionary for a birthday or Christmas is encouraged to show your love and support.  Missionaries usually respond well to a simple care package from loved ones on those special occasions.  Sending perishable items for delivery on a particular day is not practical.  Zone leaders pick up mail in the office on Monday only, to deliver to the missionaries.  Address all packages to the mission office. It is best not to send large or bulky items they will want to bring home.

Active Support:  Your missionary will be inspired by your own active service and personal efforts to share your testimony.  Pray for the success of your missionary in your family and personal prayers.  Remember his or her companion and the investigators in those prayers, too.
